LaGuardia Airport (LGA)
LaGuardia Airport is a civil airport in East Elmhurst, Queens, New York City. The facility was established in 1929 and began operating as a public airport in 1939.
As of 2019, it was the third-busiest airport in the New York metropolitan area. It also accommodates airline service to domestic and some international destinations.
Due to having outdated facilities, LGA Airport was in need of reconstruction. Sixense was contracted by New York Geomatics (NYG) to provide monitoring expertise and automated survey capabilities on two separate occasions during the LGA Airport redevelopment.
Sixense Monitoring Services
The first job was in 2017, and NYG was hired to provide equipment, field surveying, and New York State Professional Land Surveyor services for the instrumentation and monitoring program during the renovation of LGA Airport’s Delta Concourse G piles and foundation work. On the second job in 2018, New York Geomatics was hired to provide their services during the pile-driving activities for the Delta Terminal.
Sixense’s capabilities throughout the project consisted of the following:
- Instrumentation installation supervision
- Automated Total Stations specialization
- Cyclops software for data acquisition
- Geoscope software for data storage and visualization
LGA Airport Project Challenges
Both phases of the project came with similar challenges, such as accessing certain areas where security clearance was needed, heavy traffic surrounding the job site, and the terminal being active during the renovation. For the second job, the large site was also evolving rapidly, making our work more difficult.
Despite these challenges, Sixense completed the scope of work successfully in partnership with New York Geomatics.
