Railway Monitoring

Through advanced sensors and automated measurement systems, railway monitoring delivers real‑time data that supports early detection of risks and informed infrastructure management.

Sixense’s railway monitoring solutions are designed specifically for the unique constraints and operational demands of the rail sector. Using advanced, field‑proven techniques, we help infrastructure owners track the condition and behavior of their assets with precision.

These methods can be applied to monitor:

  • The impact of construction or maintenance activities near or beneath the tracks
  • Infrastructure aging and structural fatigue
  • Geotechnical risks such as landslides, unstable embankments or excavations, rock mass instability, and hidden cavities or dissolution zones

The goal of effective railway monitoring is to maintain uninterrupted operations while ensuring the highest level of safety for passengers, crews, and maintenance personnel.

Our Railway Monitoring Solutions

Cyclops

Automated topographic monitoring

Cyclops provides automated topographic measurements to track settlement or uplift with high precision. It is one of the most versatile and widely used solutions for absolute X, Y, and Z monitoring in the rail sector.

Multiple Cyclops units can operate together to achieve exceptional accuracy across large areas, making it ideal for complex railway monitoring environments. An autonomous power option also allows deployment in locations without access to the electrical grid.

4DShape

Continuous segmented inclinometer

4DShape is a continuous “chain” inclinometer composed of 50‑centimeter segments, each capable of measuring inclination. This system is particularly effective for monitoring settlement along horizontal alignments such as embankments and railway tracks.

Its continuous profile measurement makes 4DShape a valuable tool for long‑term railway monitoring where subtle ground movements must be detected early.

Rail Serenity

Railway track monitoring

Rail Serenity combines the Cyclops system with strategically installed tiltmeters to deliver redundant, highly reliable measurements. This integrated approach provides 24/7 surveillance of track behavior and includes advanced filtering to eliminate false alarms.

As a comprehensive railway monitoring solution, Rail Serenity ensures continuous oversight of track geometry and operational safety.

Tiltmeters

Monitoring track movement

Tiltmeters (or electrolevels) measure changes in inclination and can be mounted on beams of known length to calculate relative displacement between beam ends. When installed in a continuous longitudinal array, they allow engineers to determine settlement profiles by surveying a single reference point.

Tiltmeters can be attached directly to rails or sleepers to monitor critical operational parameters such as changes in cant or twist. They function reliably in harsh weather and remain operational even when trains are passing, making them a robust component of railway monitoring programs.

Dansometers

Measuring “rail dance”

“Rail dance” refers to the dynamic vertical movement of a rail under each passing axle. Monitoring this behavior is essential because increased rail dance often indicates deterioration in the supporting system—whether sleepers, ballast, or subgrade.

In some cases, the stiffness of the rail can mask voids or localized settlement between train passages, but a dansometer will detect these changes immediately. Rail deflection gauges may use high‑frequency displacement sensors or, for greater accuracy, accelerometers with double integration and specialized algorithms.
