InSAR Monitoring – Our Expertise

InSAR Monitoring measures millimetric surface deformation to detect risks and protect infrastructure across all project phases.

InSAR monitoring uses satellite radar interferometry to track surface deformation with millimetric precision across large areas. By comparing  SAR images acquired at different times, Sixense’s InSAR processing chain produces continuous, high-accuracy displacement data throughout the construction, operation, and maintenance phases of any project, with no on-site equipment required.

Measurement frequency can be customized to match project requirements and risk levels: weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly, or annually. Rapid bulletins summarize the latest deformation trends, while in-depth analytical reports cover every critical asset. Our InSAR monitoring provides information for each project phase, with data adapted to specific site conditions and timeline.

As a proven remote sensing solution for geotechnical risk mitigation, InSAR monitoring helps project teams detect early warning signs of ground movement, validate construction impacts, and maintain long-term asset integrity.

InSAR Monitoring for Ground Deformation from Space

InSAR monitoring measures ground deformation using radar signals reflected off the earth’s surface, with images acquired at different time intervals. Our InSAR monitoring chain supports all major SAR sensors, allowing Sixense to task satellites every few days and build customized programs that provide precise displacement data.

Each satellite band, X-band, C-band, or L-band, provides different spatial resolution and penetration depth. Sixense’s InSAR monitoring selects the most appropriate band based on site conditions, vegetation cover, and expected deformation patterns.

New satellite constellations will soon provide daily imagery at high spatial resolution, making it possible to monitor and image large surface areas, with quick response, using InSAR technology for infrastructure projects of any scale.

InSAR Monitoring Use Cases

Monitoring Construction Impacts

During construction, InSAR monitoring delivers deformation analysis across millions of measurement points with millimetric accuracy. The technique measures ground movement over areas far beyond the defined Zone of Influence (ZOI), detecting unexpected displacement such as settlement caused by dewatering. Project teams use this data to manage subsidence claims and complement traditional in-situ instrumentation programs.

Tunneling: Settlement from Volume Loss

InSAR monitoring is particularly effective for detecting ground displacement caused by tunneling activities. It helps:

  • Track settlement due to volume loss
  • Verify surveying reference points
  • Identify widening of settlement troughs beyond the predicted ZOI
  • Assess impacts on nearby buildings and infrastructure

Mining and Tailings Dam Risk Reduction

In mining environments, InSAR monitoring supports both open-pit and underground operations by providing:

  • Displacement map coverage across large, remote areas
  • Tailings dam stability tracking
  • Waste dump behavior monitoring
  • Access road and pipeline deformation detection

Monitoring results from regular measurements at high precision help operators detect risks early and implement safety measures before failures occur.

Early Warning for Landslides and Slope Failures

InSAR monitoring identifies precursor ground motion that may signal landslides or slope failures before they reach critical thresholds. Satellite displacement data provides continuous coverage of:

  • Highways
  • Railways
  • Pipelines
  • Mines and tailings dams
  • Bridges and critical infrastructure

Non-linear or accelerating displacement patterns enable project teams to implement mitigation before conditions deteriorate.

Long-Term Infrastructure Maintenance

InSAR monitoring is used to measure long-term stability and ground motion across large infrastructure areas. Continuous satellite data captures gradual deformation trends over time, helping asset owners assess structural health and prioritize maintenance before damage develops.
