Structural Deformation Monitoring of the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion
The $3.8 billion Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion project stands as the largest initiative in the history of the Virginia Department of Transportation. This monumental project involves constructing twin bored tunnels west of the existing immersed-tube tunnel and bridge, enhancing connectivity and capacity in the region.
Baseline Monitoring Powered by Sixense Expertise
To ensure the success and safety of the project, Sixense was selected by the design-build team Hampton Roads Connector Partners (HRCP)—comprising Dragados USA, Flatiron Construction, VINCI Construction Grands Projects, and Dodin Campenon Bernard. From August 2019 to August 2020, Sixense conducted baseline structural deformation monitoring of the existing tunnel, approach walls, and multiple facility buildings on both the south and north islands connected by the crossing.
A Robust Real-Time Monitoring System
Sixense implemented a sophisticated near real-time deformation monitoring system tailored to the project’s needs. This system utilized:
- 9 Cyclops automatic motorized total stations (AMTS).
- Approximately 50 innovative 4Dbloc low-cost, high-precision GNSS receivers.
- Over 60 wireless tiltmeters for comprehensive structural insights.
This integrated system provided unparalleled precision, ensuring the project’s safety and structural integrity throughout the monitoring phase.
Expanded Monitoring Scope Following High-Quality Results
Recognized for its exceptional work during the first stage of baseline monitoring, Sixense was awarded a new contract in August 2020 to transition into active construction stage monitoring. The expanded scope now includes additional AMTS units, vibration monitors, and various geotechnical instruments, further strengthening the structural deformation monitoring of the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion project.
