W-BMS Project

When the City of Winnipeg set out to modernize its aging Bridge Management System, Sixense Northern America answered the call by winning a competitive bidding process to deliver our innovative Beyond Asset solution —branded as W-BMS.

Our mission was to enable the City to better manage its bridge assets by centralizing and organizing condition data from various sources, modeling structural deterioration to forecast major rehabilitation needs, identifying maintenance priorities, and managing annual inspection programs and budgets.

W-BMS: A Transformative Journey in Bridge Management

As the City of Winnipeg transitioned to OSIM inspection procedures, we joined forces with Dillon Consulting Limited, a respected local firm, to deliver specialized training on visual OSIM inspections and the methodology for capturing element-level ratings. In tandem, our implementation of a Life Cycle Cost analysis fortified the City’s long-term asset management strategy.

The W-BMS project deployed a suite of modules—including inventory, inspection, flags, activities, GIS, scheduling, reporting, dashboards, and life cycle cost analysis—to monitor a diverse portfolio of structures:

• 123 bridges and overpasses
• 71 culvert
• 3 retaining walls
• 3 noise walls
• 313 overhead sign structures
• 2 guardrails
• 20 roadside safety devices
• 32 underpasses
• 1 private structure
• 3 underpass pumping stations

Project Successes and Challenges

Throughout the project, the City of Winnipeg proved to be a cooperative and responsive partner. Regular meetings and open dialogue allowed us to refine our initial approach; although we initially intended to reuse an existing configuration for the Life Cycle Cost analysis, their valuable feedback guided us to develop a new configuration that better addressed their specific needs—an adjustment that ultimately led to a more tailored, effective solution.

The project, executed with an initial contract size of CAD 349,300 and a final contract size of CAD 365,101, is a prime example of how collaboration and innovation can drive success.

In Conclusion

W-BMS not only showcases the power of Beyond Asset as a fully configurable product but also highlights our commitment to providing tailored solution advice and rapid support.
